Incremental is working in collaboration with Nudge Community Builders on the C103 Youth Housing project in Plymouth. The community organisation are seeking to create accommodation for 26 young people who have recently left formal supported living. Locked in a conservation area, aspirations for the project are high including locally constructed, low carbon materials and renewable energy sources.

The scheme will offer a mix of shared apartments, and houses ranging from three to five bedrooms, and a common room with shared space for eating, relaxing and doing laundry, plus a ‘Library of Things’ – something that helps to reduce the overall carbon footprint of the development, and promote independence.

The conservation area includes beautiful architecture such as the neighbouring Grade II listed Palace Theatre and a locally-listed terrace. The design must therefore be complementary to its context and it will pick up on Plymouth’s tradition of ‘yards’ where interesting things happen behind the building line. Arched entrances and new front will build upon the character of Union Street and protect some of the historic features of the site.

A journey beyond this place

Nudge Community Builders are the client, with Incremental producing the design of the homes through a series of collaborative workshops with experts on supported and social care homes. The project is fundamentally arranged around the concept of growth, which will take different forms across the three stages of moving to independence: arrival, future, and up and away.
