Cycling Megacities
Sustainability, climate change and health benefits are pushing European cities to promote widespread bicycle use. But what lessons can be learnt from megacities in developing countried? Currently there are 23 megacities; by 2025 the UN predicts nine new megacities in Asia bringing the total to 37. All but eight of these will be in the developing world – the quality of life for millions will be determined by the quality of their cities.
How is urban public space being shaped in developing megacities to influence a culture of cycling?
This research project took Charlie to thirteen megacities around the world to explore how they are developing infrastructure for cycling and supporting a culture of bicycle use. The research explored how megacities are developing and how social activism, policies and private investments are transforming urban public space in a bid to make the bicycle a transportation option for all social classes.
